Abstract

1,159,277. Resilient beam axle suspension. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 12 Jan., 1967 [2 Feb., 1966], No. 1660/67. Heading B7D. A motor vehicle suspension comprises an axle 1 with a torque tube 5 secured to its differential housing 4 and a triangular frame 10 with its apex pivoted to the differential housing or to the torque tube 5 adjacent the differential housing and its base 11 pivoted to the vehicle sprung mass about a transverse vehicle axis. As shown the frame 10 is pivoted to a pin 9 carried by a bracket 7 of the torque tube 5 through a resilient bush 17 and is pivoted to the sprung mass through resilient bushes 18, 19 and coaxial pins 14, 15. The torque tube is pivoted to the sprung mass through a pin 8 carried by a torque tube bracket 6 and a resilient bush 16 carried by the base 11 of the frame 10. A universal joint 20 of a drive shaft 21 may be disposed substantially on the axis of the pins 14, 15 to avoid the necessity for a sliding joint in the drive shaft. A helical suspension spring is located at each end of the axle.
