Abstract

933,145. Road vehicle spring suspensions. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. March 29, 1961 [April 12, 1960], No. 12980/60. Class 108(2). A vehicle wheel support 6 is mounted on a generally longitudinal link 1 attached to the sprung portion of the vehicle by a Hooke's joint or other non-rotatable universal joint. Lateral location of the wheel is provided by a fixed length axle member 5, pivoted at its ends to the wheel support 6 and sprung portion of the vehicle respectively by Hooke's joints if the shaft 5 is a drive shaft or about a pair of longitudinal axes if the wheel is non-driven. The link 1 may be cranked and pivotally connected to the wheel support on a vertical axis for use with driven or non-driven steerable wheels and the wheel may be sprung by a combined coil or pneumatic spring and hydraulic damper unit. The change of camber angle # (Fig. 2) with wheel movement can be varied during design by altering the transverse position of and the mounting face angle on the sprung mass of the Hooke's joint 3.
