Abstract

Crushed ore containing several minerals is concentrated by separating out one of the minerals by a method involving coating preferentially some of the particles of the ore with a liquid fluorescent material, irradiating the ore with electromagnetic radiation and detecting the resulting characteristic radiation of the coating material photoelectrically in order to operate the separating mechanism. Various fluorescent materials for coating the ore are described, which may or may not need bonding agents (collectors). A particular material is used depending on which mineral is to be sorted out, the material being applied by spraying or dipping, simultaneously or sequentially with the collector (if required). Fluorescent materials that can be used are as follows: anthracene, fluorescein, chrysene, aminoacetal picrate, petroleum base lubricating oil (which does not need a collector since it preferentially adheres to some minerals and also fluoresces), allylamine picrate, aluminium palmitate, ammonium mandelate, calcium triethanolamine theobromine, ferrous stearate, glyceryl mono-oleate, glyceryl monostearate, hydrastine, hydrastine chloride, lead naphthenate, lead linoleate, lead stearate, manganous stearate and benzene. Solids may be dissolved in solution for application e.g. anthracene in benzene. Collectors mentioned are as follows. Anionic (adhering to minerals such as metals and sulphides):-alkali alkyl xanthates (e.g. sodium sec.-butyl, potassium ethyl, sodium ethyl and potassium amyl xanthates); aryl (e.g. phenyl) dithiophosphoric acids; fatty acids (e.g. stearic); thio carbanilide; saponified fatty acids (e.g. sodium and potassium stearates); sulphonated oils; glycerides (e.g. tripalmitin and tristearin); and alcohols. Cationic (adhering to minerals such as silicates):-alkyl ammonium halides (e.g. amyl and cetyl, trimethyl ammonium bromides); alkali metal and alkaline earth metal alkyl aryl sulphonates (e.g. sodium and calcium, dodecyl benzene sulphonates); alkyl ammonium acetates (e.g. dodecyl ammonium acetate); long chain (e.g. dodecyl) alcohols; ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acids (e.g. oleic and linoleic) and their soaps (e.g. sodium oleate and sodium linoleate); fatty amine acetates; and benzene. Examples of minerals that can be extracted are: quartz, limestone and sulphide-containing minerals from various ores.
