Abstract

1,078,191. Gas fired water heaters. RADIATION Ltd. Feb. 4, 1964 [Feb. 5, 1963], No. 4694/63. Heading F4A. In a gas water heater heat exchanger comprising at least one finned water tube, a heat absorbing circuit is connected to the tube to provide a water circulating path comprising the tube and circuit so that residual heat in the finned tubes when the heater is turned off is absorbed by water in the circuit to prevent boiling and noise generation. As shown the heat exchanger comprises four finned, series connected, heating tubes 1 . . . 4, which may be of stainless steel, with a small cylindrical tank 6 connected in parallel across tubes 3, 4 and disposed clear of the path of combination products leaving the heat exchanger. During operation water flows through the tubes 1 . . . 4, the tank 6, tubing wound round the combustion chamber of the heater (not shown) and emerges through pipe 8. When the heater is turned off water including that from the tank continues to circulate through the tubes 3, 4. In another embodiment the finned tubes are connected in parallel between headers and tank 6 is connected between the headers with means for reducing the circulation through the tank whilst the heat exchanger is in use which may consist of non-return valves or small diameter pipes. In a further embodiment heat, for example from a separate gas burner is supplied to the circulation path to maintain a flow through the circulation circuit when the heater is turned off and the water, the temperature of which may be controlled by a thermostat, can be supplied when the heater is again used.
