Abstract

In an edge guiding system for sheet material, an edge feeler operates a switch on deviation of the edge from a predetermined position so that a controller including a particular arrangement of electronic valves, relays and time delay device restores the edge to the predetermined position. In Fig. 1, fabric 10 having a pile 11 and a selvage 12 is supported on a driven feed roll 15. Before starting feed roll 15, a handwheel 43 is operated to move a detector 30 into the position shown so that pairs of cam-shaped feelers 31, 32, 33, 34, rotatable on a shaft 35, ride on the pile and selvage respectively in the manner shown. During operation, if the fabric moves laterally in one direction or the other, the relative movement of feelers 31, 32 or 33, 34 actuates associated switches to operate thermionic valve relays 28 and cause an electric motor 25 to run in the appropriate direction to restore the fabric to the position shown by lateral movement of roll 15. Additional switches associated with the feelers ensure appropriate operation of motor 25 even if the lateral deviation is such that all the feelers ride on the pile or selvage. The position of roll 15 may alternatively be controlled through a fluid-pressure actuator. Thermionic valve relays 28 include adjustable resistancecapacity delay networks to prevent operation of motor 25 as the result of occasional edge imperfections.
