Abstract
884,857. Automatic control systems. CORDIER, A. Jan. 8, 1958, No. 30913/61. Divided out of 884,856. Class 38 (4). Material which is being automatically advanced is temporarily arrested at one point by a member movable transversely to the direction of movement of the material so that the material makes a rotary movement about the said point. As shown, material 19 lying on the work-table 6 of a sewing machine is advanced perpendicular to the plane of the drawing by a feed dog (not shown) associated with a presser foot 4. The edge of the material is engaged by a spring- loaded feeler 10 operating adjustable electrical contacts 12, 13 relative to a fixed contact 16 so that a solenoid 1 or 2 is energized to cause a pointed member 1b or 2b to engage the material which is then pivoted around the pointed member by the feed to restore the edge to a position which is a predetermined distance from needle 5. Stitching is thus maintained at a fixed distance from the edge of the material. The feeler may serve to arrest the material in place of one of the pointed members. If the curvature of the work is in one direction only, e.g. shoe soles, a single pivoted member suffices.
