Abstract
Thiazole or substituted derivatives thereof are obtained by heating sulphur in the gas phase with a nitrogenous organic compound containing an appropriate number and arrangements of carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen atoms whereby the nitrogenous compound is dehydrogenated and cyclized with the incorporation of sulphur into the ring to form thiazole or a substituted derivative thereof. The process is preferably effected at 200-1000 DEG C. in an inert atmosphere and the starting materials are suitably entrained in nitrogen and passed in the gaseous phase into the reaction zone. The nitrogenous organic compound may be formed in situ from simpler precursors, e.g. from a primary amine and an aldehyde. Examples are given in which thiazole, and 2-, 4- and 5-methyl thiazoles are prepared, and in which acetonitrile, propionitrile and butyro nitrile are obtained as by-products.
