Abstract
A phosphor combined storage and viewing screen for a bi-stable storage and display tube (see Division H1) comprises a phosphur layer having a plurality of holes extending through it and consisting of zinc orthosilicate activated by mangenese, zinc beryllium orthosilicate, calcium tungstate, or zinc sulphide activated by mangenese, and may be mixed with 10 to 25% magnesium oxide for improved secondary electron emissive properties. The layer may be 0.0015 to 0.003 inch thick, and the holes may be 0.0006 to 0.002 inch in diameter and cover 10 to 25% of the surface area of the layer. The layer may be formed by preparing a mixture of the phosphor material in an organic binder and a solvent, and adding two organic materials which, in a decalomania process, combine and separate from the remainder of the mixture to form regions of organic material containing no phosphor when the mixture is spread over a casting plate. After applying the material to the tube faceplate these regions are decomposed and washed out to leave the holes. Alternatively a photographic technique may be used.
