Abstract
Compounds of the general Formula (I) <FORM:1077443/C2/1> (wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a C1- 4 alkyl, phenyl or C1- 4 alkyl-substituted phenyl group and R2 represents a C1- 4 alkyl group, a monovalent cation or one equivalent of a polyvalent cation) and acid addition salts of those compounds in which R2 represents a C1- 4 alkyl group or a hydrogen atom are prepared by (a) reacting a compound of the Formula (II) <FORM:1077443/C2/2> with R1CHO, optionally followed by acid addition salt formation in appropriate cases, or (b) in the case of compounds in which R2 represents a metallic or organic cation, reacting a - methyl - b - (3,4 - dihydroxyphenyl) alanine with R1CHO in the presence of a base containing or corresponding to the cation R2, optionally followed in the case of either process by resolution. The preparation of starting materials of Formula (II) is described.
