Abstract
1,077,436. Magnetic separators; separating granular materials. F. L. SMIDTH & CO. A/S. April 26, 1966, No. 18241/66. Headings B2H and B2J. Ferro-magnetic particles are separated from non-magnetic particles in a mixture of finegrained materials by causing the mixture to flow as a gas-fluidised stream beneath an endless belt-type magnetic separator. In Fig. 1, the mixture of materials is fed via a chute 1 on to a gas-permeable bottom of a fluidised-bed conveyor which is closed at the top partly by a cover 7 and partly by an endless belt 8 within which is mounted a magnet 9. Fluidising air is introduced through a pipe 3 leading to distribution chambers 4, 5. Magnetic particles carried by the belt are released from magnetic attraction when the part of the belt comes over a chute 10 down which the magnetic particles fall. The non-magnetic particles are discharged through a chute 6. Transverse ribs 12 are provided on the belt to cause the magnetic particles to be carried by the belt beyond the edge 11 of the magnet 9. In another embodiment Fig. 2 (not shown) the chute (1') has a gas-permeable, steeply sloping bottom (2') and baffle plates (16, 17, 18) are provided to cause the material itself to form a gas seal at the entrance to the fluidised-bed conveyor. The bulk of the material passes over baffle (17) and heavy particles pass through the narrow clearance (21) which may be adjusted by adjusting the plate (17). The size of the entrance (19) for the material may be adjusted by adjusting the plate (16). The magnetic separator comprises a magnetic drum (9') over which a belt (8') passes. Magnetic particles are discharged through a chute (10') and non- magnetic particles through a chute (6'). Non- magnetic particles entrained with magnetic particles are removed from the belt by compressed air blown through a pipe (13). Dustladen gas is discharged via an outlet (14).
