Abstract

Apparatus for dyeing pile material comprises an endless perforated conveyor moving the material below dye delivery means which deliver the dye in a stream to the material in controlled quantities sufficient to at least partially penetrate the pile of the material but not sufficient to cause dissipation of the dye to surrounding material, means for stabilizing the dye are located in a post dyeing position. The dye delivery means comprise supply tanks which communicate via pipes with constant level feed tanks (17), Figs. 1-2 (not shown). Each feed tank (17) communicates with a plurality of tubes (26) which may be of rigid stainless steel or flexible rubber or other suitable materials, the end of each tube (26) being fitted with a rigid, preferably stainless steel, capillary tube (27). The quantity of dye passing through the tubes (26) is controlled by solenoid valves or by pinching bars located at (22), Fig. 1 (not shown); the control may be automatically programmed to selectively open and close the tubes (26) to produce a variety of patterns on the dyed pile material. The delivery tubes (26) may be secured in holders (34) which are laterally movable along tracks (35), Fig. 3 (not shown). A drip tray is located beneath the conveyor at the dyeing position. In the preferred embodiment, the stabilizing means comprises a convex conveyor (45) passing beneath one or more perforated pipes (46) which drench the dyed material with cold water or other suitable liquid, Fig. 1-A (not shown). Suitable pile materials comprise cellulosics, polyamides, wool and acrylics; suitable dyes comprise reduced vat dyes, sulphur dyes, azoic dyes, and the like.
