Abstract

A decorative image is printed upon the exterior surface of a glass or devitrified glass article while the surface is at 500 DEG F. or more. Colorant frit particles are arranged in a pattern, the glass surface is juxtaposed, and the particles are attracted electrostatically to the glass surface. Alternatively, the colorant frit particles are supported on a screen, the glass surface is located adjacent the opposite side of the screen, and an electric field is then applied, the particles being brushed through the screen openings and attracted to the glass surface. The particles thermally adhere to the glass surface, which either retains heat from the forming process or has been reheated. The particles are subsequently fused to one another and the glass surface, e.g. during the annealing treatment. The particles may be provided with an electrically-insulating coating. Particles of more than one coloration may be applied simultaneously or successively. Before transfer, the particles may be arranged in a pattern on a metal carrier-plate, or in the recesses of a metal gravure plate. The shape of the carrier may conform to the surface to be decorated, or it may be flat and a convex glass surface moved relative thereto, e.g. by rolling. A range of soda-lime glass compositions is given to which the following colorants may be added: oxides of Ti, Cu, Co, Fe or sodium dichromate.
