Abstract
Sulphur dioxide and/or ammonia from scrubbed gases obtained in the production of ammonium bisulphate by scrubbing sulphur dioxide-containing gas with an aqueous solution of ammonia are removed by contacting with an approximately equimolar solution of ammonium sulphite and ammonium bisulphite. The gas which may contain 16-18% SO2 from burning S in air, is passed at 10 into a packed tower, whence ammonium bisulphite is withdrawn at 12. Ammonia solution or ammonia plus water enters the tower at 11 and effluent gases pass at 13 to a packed recovery tower where they meet a countercurrent of solution of equimolar ammonium sulphite and ammonium bisulphite of pH 6.1, which is recycled from pump tank 17 to the recovery tower at 15. To ensure maintenance of pH 6.1 ammonia may be added at 19 or the So2 or ammonia input to first tower may be varied. Part of the solution is withdrawn at 22 to the acid tank or to the acid tower.
