Abstract
Anodes of Ti or an alloy thereof having comparable anodic polarization properties comprising members spaced side-by-side and extending longitudinally in a common plane are connected together by at least one transverse rib, are coated with a platinum group metal so that at least half the area of the coating is on surfaces which are perpendicular to the common plane of the members. Platinum group metals are the metals Pt, Rh, Os, Ir, Ru or alloys of these metals with each other. In one form the electrode is made by machining grooves at right angles in opposite faces of a Ti plate to such depth that their intersections form apertures, the side walls of the grooves being coated with Pt. In another form Ti ribs set on edge are joined across their upper edges by a transverse Ti bus-bar and are coated with Pt on their lower edges and on part of their vertical faces. Such electrodes provide ready escape for gases evolved and are specially suitable as anodes in mercury cathode brine cells.
