Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:1076871/C2/1> wherein R is halogen, haloalkyl, C1- 5 alkoxy, C1- 6 alkanoyl, aryl, aralkyl, aralkoxy, carboxy or C1- 5 alkylsulphonyl; R1 is C1- 5 alkyl or alkoxy; and R2 is halogen, alkenyl or C1- 5 alkoxy; and pharmacologically acceptable amides, esters and salts thereof; and the preparation thereof by reacting an appropriately substituted alkali metal phenate with a suitable monosubstituted phenyl-haloacetic ester and hydrolysing the resulting ester and, if desired, converting the resulting acid to a salt, ester or amide thereof. Pharmaceutical preparations having hypocholesterolemic activity, for oral or parenteral administration, comprise one or more compounds of the invention and an inert diluent, optionally with the addition of a known hypocholesterolemic, therapeutic or nutritive agent. The compositions may be in unit dosage forms such as pills, tablets or capsules, or in elixirs or injectable solutions.
