Abstract
Finely-divided fillers having negative surface charges are dispersed in aqueous cationic bituminous emulsions by wetting them with an aqueous solution of a polyvalent metal salt, e.g. aluminium chloride or sulphate, ferric chloride, chromic chloride, or calcium chloride, in an amount of 0.5-20 parts of the salt to 100 parts of the filler, and then mixing into the emulsion having a continuous aqueous phase, a dispersed bituminous phase, and a cationic emulsifier. The salt can be partly or wholly replaced by 0.05-3.5 parts of a quaternary ammonium compound containing at least one quaternary ammonium group and an aliphatic group of 8-22 carbon atoms.ALSO:Aqueous emulsions of bituminous materials and a cationic emulsifying agent are mixed with finely-divided fillers wetted with an aqueous solution of a polyvalent metal salt or a quaternary ammonium compound. The bituminous material, e.g. asphalt, tar, pitch, petroleum resin, coumarone-indene resin, &c., constituents 20 - 80% by weight, preferably 50 - 70%, of the emulsion. As emulsifying agent, there may be used N-alkyl polymethylene, N-alkyl polymethylene mono-or polyethoxylated diamines, amide amines, heterocyclic amines, or the alkyl or alkyl polyethoxylated quaternary or diquaternary ammonium compounds.
