Abstract

An emulsifying agent for bitumen is made by dissolving casein in alkali, adding a cationic surface-active agent, and then treating with an acid and heating to re-dissolve any casein compound thrown out. Surface-active agents specified are long chain amines or salts thereof, or quaternary ammonium compounds, e.g. stearylamine, and cetyl pyridinium bromide. In an example, casein dissolved in water with a little alkali is mixed with a small amount of heptadecenyl hydroxy ethyl glyoxaldine. The mixture is warmed with the addition of hydrochloric or acetic acid, and the product used to emulsify bitumen. The bitumen emulsion used for road dressing or coating aggregate.
