Abstract

Mooring.-To avoid vibration in ropes or cables used for anchoring or mooring, the rope or cable is made of triangular form or is enclosed in a triangular sheathing, and is arranged so that it automatically sets itsell with one corner leading with respect to the line. of real or apparent flow. As shown in Fig. L, the rope consists of three wormed cores a, b, c, placed side by side and enclosed in a triangular metal sheathing d formed in short lengths. The cores b, c may be dispensed with, or may be replaced by a wooden filling formed in short lengths. In a modification, the rope consists of four triangular cores m, n, p, q, Fig. 8, each consisting of circular wires laid up around a trangular core l. The four cores m, n, p, q are arranged lengthwise side by side in triangular form with metal tapes r placed along each face, the tapes being secured in position by an outer covering of laid wires s. In order that the ropes may be set with one corner leading, the core situated in the leading corner is arranged to take practically the whole of the strain.
