Abstract
126,011. Wright, J. & E., and Taylor, T. A. Oct. 20, 1916. Wire ropes; flat-sided ropes; strands of special section, ropes with.-Relates to wire ropes, or strands therefor, of the kind composed of a number of straight-laid strands assembled and bound together, to give the desired cross-section. According to the invention, the strands are bound together by a series of wires helically laid within the interstices of the wires forming the strands. The strands a are composed of a central straight wire a', Figs. 3 and 4, and three outer wires helically laid about the central wire. A number of such strands are arranged parallel with one another to form the desired cross-section, for example round, triangular, rectangular, or elliptical, an additional central core composed of two seven-wire strands placed side by side being used in the case of elliptical ropes. Six such strands are shown in Fig. 6 arranged in triangular form. The assembled strands are then bound together by wires b, Fig. 7. which are helically laid within the interstices left between the wires of the strands a, so as to be practically flush with the latter and within the desired cross-sectional contour. An outer protective covering of one or more layers of coiled wire may be added.
