Abstract

1,076,278. Cooling towers. L. T. MART CO. Ltd. Aug. 4, 1964 [Sept. 19, 1963], No. 36938/63. Heading F4K. A water-cooling tower having an open top and an air inlet around its bottom comprises an outer shell 1 and contains packing which consists of rings of concentric louvres 12 arranged in layers on radial bearers 13, the whole being held up by beams 14 and 15 and supported on concrete beams 7, all or at least the outermost rings 12 being shaped so that water falling on their top surface is deflected towards the shell, a shroud ring 17 being provided around the lower part of the shell above the opening and having vertical sides so that water from the louvres falling on to its inner surface flows from its sharply defined lower edge 22 forming a curtain of water over the bottom opening. The louvres may be made of wood and be of right-angled triangular section arranged with the hypotenuse vertical or sloping slightly inwards so that the top surface slopes downwards and outwards. Louvres in adjacent layers may be staggered so that water running from one layer to another tends to progress towards the shell. The shroud ring shown is made of thin sheet material, e.g. plywood, fixed on batons 18, 19, and 20, and sealed to the shell by copper flashing 21. Water enters pipes 9 and sprays out from jets 10. The bottom opening of the tower is formed by resting the bottom edge 4 of the shell on legs 3 Fig. 1 (not shown).
