Abstract

In a hydraulically-operated vibrator the spool 63, Fig. 4, of control valve 54 is caused to reciprocate out of phase with the vibrator piston 52 by. coupling it with piston rod 53 through a split annular leaf spring 69. One end of the spring 69 is rigidly secured to an arm 66 fixed to the rod 53 and the other end is connected through a linkage 73 with the spool 63. The effective circumferential length of the spring, and therefore the spring rate, is varied by angular adjustment of an arm 75 carrying a clamping screw 78. The position of the arm 75 may be indicated by providing graduations on the spring and a viewing opening 79 in the arm. Increasing the spring rate reduces the stroke and thereby increases the reciprocating frequency of the piston 52. The frequency may also be varied by adjustment of stops 64, 65 or by mounting a weight for movement with the spool 63. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), a straight leaf spring (38) is secured at one end to a support (37) connected through a block (13) to a reciprocating piston (18) and at the other end to a valve spool (31). The reciprocating frequency is varied by vertical adjustment, through screw means (44), Fig. 2 (not shown), of a block (46) surrounding the spring, and/or by varying the number of weights (39) attached to the spring. The block (13) may be fixed and the cylinder housing (11) reciprocated to vibrate a body attached to a flange (15).
