Abstract

A free-machining, austenitic stainless steel comprises:- ..C from a trace up to 0.15% ..Mn 2-10% ..Ni 4-13% ..Cr 10-20% ..Cu 0.5-3.0% ..S 0.1-0.4% ..N 0.1% maximum ..Si 2% maximum .optionally.Mo up to 0.6% .and.Zr up to 0.6% the balance, apart from residual impurities, being iron. The alloy components are so proportioned that:- % Cr + 1.5 (% Si) - 0.87 [30 (% C + % N) + % Ni + 0.5 (% Mn) + 0.3(% Cu)] + 1 is less than 10 and the copper content does not exceed 3.85 - 0.18 (% Mn - 55/32 % S).
