Abstract

1,076,059. Separating water from fuel. J. L. McQUERRY & W. W. LOWREY. July 7, 1965, No. 28844/65. Heading B1D. [Also in Division F4] In the fuel supply line to a diesel engine is provided the device shown which preheats the fuel means of the engine exhaust gases and at the same time causes water and other foreign matter to separate out of the fuel before the latter passes to the engine. The device comprises concentric tubular elements 42, 43 providing therebetween an annular space the upper portion of which is subdivided by baffles 46, 48, 50, 52, 54 into compartments interconnected only by narrow gaps between neighbouring baffles as shown. The baffles are so disposed that the fuel which enters the space through two inlets 22, 24 must pass through a number of the narrow gaps before reaching the outlet 26, and in so doing the water and other foreign matter separates out and collects in the baffle-free, relatively stagnant, lowermost zone from which it is withdrawn through a valved outlet 60. The fuel after leaving the device at 26 passes through a filter 32 (Fig 1 not shown) before it reaches the engine. Exhaust gases from the engine are collected by a scoop (38 Fig. 5) and passed by way of a duct 40 (which may be flexible) through the inner tube 42 of the device in order to heat the fuel. The gases leave the tube 42 through a perforated end plate 56.
