Locking of a fluid actuated piston (1) Fig. 1 (not shown) at either end of a cylinder (5) is effected by one or other of two sets of spring claws (14) carried by said cylinder ends engaging shoulders (13) formed in piston recesses (12) and unlocking at the start of a stroke is effected by the action of fluid-pressure on an auxiliary piston (7) which is axially displaced relative to the main piston and thereby allows a cam surface (17) to contract the claws (14); the so displaced auxiliary piston then being in such a position as to allow locking of the main piston when it reaches the end of its stroke.
