Abstract

749,262. Hydraulic jacks. BRITISH MESSIER, Ltd. May 18, 1954 [May 19, 1953], No. 14095/53. Class 69 (2). A hydraulic jack is locked in its extended position by a crown of spring claws 26 which are attached to the jack cylinder 11 and are engageable in a recess in a locking collar 34 connected to a piston 19 and jack rod 20. A locking ring 40 is slidably mounted on the rod 20 and has a lost motion connection with a secondary piston 43 located within the jack rod. A spring 47 urges the locking ring to the right. Liquid is admitted at an inlet 24 to extend the jack and is also applied to the rear of piston 43 to move it to the right till it abuts a partition 41 in the jack rod. Towards the end of its stroke the claws 26 contact a chamfered edge of the lock collar and are contracted and slide within the collar, forcing the locking ring 40 back against the pressure of spring 47, until the heads of the claws engage in the recess. The locking-ring is then moved forwardly by the spring 47 so that it comes within the crown of claws and locks them in position. To unlock the jack, pressure is applied to an inlet 25, the liquid acting on the forward end of the piston 43 to force it back against a stop 50 and move the ring 40 clear of the crown of claws. In a modification an additional spring bears on the back of piston 43 and helps to maintain the parts locked when pressure is not applied at the inlet 24. Fig. 3 shows a differential-type jack in which pressure is permanently applied at inlet 25. The spring 47 bears at one end against a sleeve 52 secured to the jack rod 20, and the piston 43 works inside the sleeve. The piston 43 has an extension 53 extending into a portion 54 of the rod 20 and has a greater area exposed to pressure on its left hand side than on its right. When pressure is released at 24, the pressure permanently applied at 25, acting on a shoulder 55 between the extension 53 and piston 43, forces the locking-ring back against the pressure of the spring 47. Specification 527,225 is referred to.
