1,075,221. Thin-walled plastics containers; container closures; venting containers. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Aug. 21, 1964 [Aug. 23, 1963], No. 34299/64. Headings B8D, B8T and B8X. A thin-walled plastics container 1 has a flexible element 9 which is in communication with the outer air through apertures 4 in a cover 2. If a reduced pressure develops in the container, air is drawn into the chamber formed by the element 9, which expands, thereby preventing the container walls from being deformed. The element 9 may be in the form of strips welded or glued along their edges and be made of a flexible polymer or metal foil. The container 1 may be made of a polyolefine or laminate, and may contain motor oil. The element 9 may be connected to the cover by a rigid tube (10), Fig. 5 (not shown), and be located in the container base, Fig. 9 (not shown); or the cover 2 and element 9 may be in the top and base of the container respectively, Fig. 7 (not shown). The element 9 may also be in the form of a bag the mouth of which closely surrounds a single aperture (4), Fig. 6 (not shown); or it may be formed with bellows folds surrounding a basal aperture, Fig. 8 (not shown). The container has closed pouring spouts 8 the ends of which are cut off before use. The cover 2 is glued or welded to the container.
