Abstract
1,074,801. Transformers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 20, 1964 [Jan. 28, 1963], No. 3431/63. Heading H1T. Concentric cylindrical coils 1, 2, 3, 4 (Fig. 1) of a layer wound coil assembly of a transformer are insulated from one another by layers of paper 5 and are provided at their ends with insulating flanges 8 of cast resin material which key into recessed ends 10 of the paper insulation 5. The insulation, which may be of kraft paper, is wound on to the coils and a suitable recess 10 is provided by using temporary flanges. The assembly is completed by replacing the temporary flanges with flanges of filled epoxy resin which may be either cast in situ, completely cured or partially cured in which case the flange will soften to fit exactly into the end region of the paper insulation before curing is completed. Radial struts 7 and axial spacers 6 between the coils provide ducts which are supplied through holes 11 in the flanges with oil coolant. In a further embodiment (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) temporary flanges are provided to support coils and coolant pipes during the winding of the coil assembly. After providing an earthed shield 27 and completing the winding, pressboard cylinders which enclose the coil assembly are fitted and epoxy resin is poured into the end regions of the assembly and subsequently cured.
