Self-locking folds 13 (Fig. 1), are formed in the end of a wrapper on a roll 10, as the roll rotates, by folders 23 on arms 17 carried by a rotating spider 16; the arms 17 are controlled by followers 19 engaging a fixed cam 20 so that each folder 23 in turn dwells on the fold it has formed until the next folder has begun its folding action. The shaft 15 may be connected to the driving motor via elliptical gearing and cylindrical gearing (the cylindrical gearing having a ratio of 1 : x where x is the number of pairs of arms 16) to further define the non-uniform movement of the plates 23. The plates 23 may be provided with a rotatable circular disc or a cylindrical roller, to assist in their movement across the folds, or the plates may be replaced by a cylindrical roller tapered at its ends. The folding members may be heated by known electrical means and a heated axially-moving press plate and a spacing roller may be provided. In a second configuration (Fig. 6, not shown), two coaxial horizontal shafts (27), (28) carry one-armed spiders, which in turn carry the triangular lever, as before. The non-uniform motion of the plate (23) is governed by the guide (20) and the elliptical gearing (39-44).
