Abstract
Insulating slabs are made by treating or impregnating wood wool with fungicidal, insecticidal or bactericidal substances, mixing with cement, magnesite, lime, or gypsum, and moulding or pressing. Before moulding or pressing, the wood wool is treated with an aqueous emulsion of polyvinyl propionate or acetate, so that after moulding or pressing the wood-wool fibres are covered with a film of polyvinyl propionate or acetate. The film confines within the fibres the substances with which the wood-wool was treated or impregnated. The wood-wool may be treated with, e.g. CaCl2, MgCl2, lime water, sodium or potassium silicate, or sodium pentachlorphenolate. A foam, e.g. foamed polystyrol, may be admixed with the wood wool before moulding. The mould may be lined with a hessian cloth soaked in a preservative solution, which becomes incorporated in the finished slab. Wooden lathes may also be incorporated in the slab. The slab may subsequently be coated with e.g. methyl cellulose, bitumen, or polyvinyl acetate or propionate which may be mixed with lime or cement.ALSO:Insulating slabs are made by treating or impregnating wood wool with fungicidal, insecticidal or bactericidal substances, mixing with cement, magnesite, lime, or gypsum, and moulding or pressing.
