Abstract

Curable resin compositions are prepared by reacting a mercaptoalkyl group-containing organosilicon compound with a compound which contains at least two epoxy groups. The reaction may be performed with or without an amine catalyst, a solvent, a monoepoxide or heating. When the epoxide compound is present in stoichiometric excess the reaction product is hardenable with conventional epoxy resin curing agents and when equivalent amounts of mercaptan and epoxide are used the product hardens on standing. Mercaptoalkylorganosilicon compounds are prepared (I) by reacting g -chloropropylmethyl-siloxane, thiourea and NaI in EtOH to give g -mercaptopropylmethylsiloxane which is also prepared by hydrolysing g -mercaptopropyl-methyldiethoxysilane with hydrochloric acid; (II) by cohydrolysing g -mercaptopropylmethyl-diethoxysilane, trimethylchlorosilane and phenyltrichlorosilane with hydrochloric acid to give a product of average Formula II; (III) by cohydrolysing dimethyldichlorosilane, trimethylchlorosilane, phenyltrichlorosilane and g -chloropropylmethyldichlorosilane followed by reaction of the product with thiourea and NaI in propanol to give product of average unit Formula III; <FORM:1074179/C3/1> <FORM:1074179/C3/2> <FORM:1074179/C3/3> <FORM:1074179/C3/4> (IV) and (V) by reacting g -mercaptopropylmethyldiethoxysilane and bisphenol-A in the presence of NaOMe followed by reaction with trimethylchlorosilane to give a product of the average unit Formula IV; or of the Formula V. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 788,806.
