Abstract

1,074,150. Making cartons. REYNOLDS METALS CO. Feb. 25, 1965 [March 16, 1964], No. 8224/65. Heading B5D. A machine for making cigarette packets of paper, plastics or foil comprises an intermittently rotating wheel 42 (Figs. 2, 8, not shown) movable through twelve stations and carrying twelve rectangular arbors 43 each with a holddown member 44 and a folding means 45. Flat blanks 21 are fed in as shown in Fig. 8 and are folded into U-shape by the member 45 moving towards the arbor 43 while the wheel 42 rotates to the next station, where folding means 51, 52 are located and move to fold over the blank into tubular form with the ends overlapping. The member 52 has a head 61 carrying electric heating elements 62 so that the overlapping ends 22, 23 of the blank 21 are heat sealed together, the heated, blank ends being held in contact while they cool by the hold-down member 44 which remains in contact with the blank while any further desired operations are performed as the blank moves through subsequent stations before being ejected. Movement of the means 44, 45, 51, 52 is effected by pneumatic or hydraulic devices although they could be operated electrically or mechanically. A similar machine using glue instead of heat seals is described as prior art.
