Abstract

1,074,078. Nut runners. INGERSOLLKAND CO. Aug. 17, 1965, No. 35287/65. Heading B3N. A nut runner T, Fig. 1, comprises a housing Af, containing oil, and a spindle rotated by a motor Df, and carrying a slidable blade (26f), Fig. 2 (not shown), the blade having an aperture (142) for controlling the applied torque and the spindle having a passage (144). The spindle may be non-rotary and the housing may be rotated. During rotation of the housing of Fig. 2 (not shown), or the spindle of Fig. 1, the oil normally passes through apertures (142), (144), until the ends of the blade (A<SP>2</SP> 5 ), (A<SP>1</SP> 5 ) are in sealed engagement with the cavity (2f) between points (B<SP>1</SP> 5 )- (C<SP>1</SP> 5 ) and (B<SP>2</SP> 5 )-(C<SP>2</SP> 5 ). At these points the oil in the (HP) section of the cavity is compressed and an impulse is applied to spindle 15f), or housing (Af), and therefore a rotatable impulse is applied to the nut which is being tightened, twice for each revolution of the housing or spindle. By increasing the length of slot (142), Fig. 2 (not shown), only one impulse per revolution is provided. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), cavity (2g) is circular and two blades (26g) spring-urged apart, are provided. In a further modification passageway (144) is replaced by slots (148), Fig. 4 (not shown). The blade may have a low-pressure passage (312), Figs. 4c, 4d (not shown), connected to a high-pressure passage (314) via a spring-loaded poppet valve (310). Alternatively, a needle valve (310<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 4e (not shown), may be provided. In another modification, the pressure relief means is contained in the housing. In a still further modification, Figs. 5, 6, 6a (not shown), housing (Aj) has guide slots (150), and blade (26j) has projections (152) which are guided in the slots, and an oil by-pass (158) is provided.
