Abstract

Cleansing compositions for cleaning the surfaces of fruit and vegetables comprise an aqueous solution of 0.001-50,000 p.p.m. of a water-soluble ethylenic polymer, having a M.W. of 800,000-25,000,000, or a salt of such a polymer, the polymer being either one having the grouping <FORM:1073946/C4-C5/1> where R is a nitrile, amide, substituted amide or COOM radical, M being hydrogen, ammonium or a C1- 4 alkyl group, or an aminoalkyl acrylate polymer, an N-alkyl aminoalkyl acrylate or methacrylate polymer, a hydrogenated nitrile-type polymer, a polymer containing lactone or lactam groups, a reaction product of polyvinyl alcohol and a dibasic acid, or a polymer containing sulphonic acid groups. Many such polymers are listed, the preferred one being polyacrylamide. An inorganic detergent may also be present, e.g. trisodium phosphate, sodium sulphate, carbonate, silicate, borate, acetate or nitrate, or NaOH or KOH.
