Abstract
107,389. Bradley, L. June 21, 1916, [Convention date]. Gases, electrically precipitating suspended particles from.-In electrical apparatus for separating suspended matter from gases, uniformity of flow of the gases in the tubes of the apparatus is secured by interposing in the apparatus constrictions in the path of the gases at the inlet or outlet of the tubes but not of both. The general arrangement of apparatus described comprises a fan 22 which draws the gas to be purified from flues 2, 4 and injects them into a chamber 5, with which the flue 4 also communicates by a damper 21. Steam or water or other vapour such as sulphuric acid may be injected from a pipe 23. From the chamber 5 the gas to be purified passes through pipes 6 having valves 7 to the dust-separators 8 in which it flows downwardly and thence passes by pipes 9 having valves 10 to a chamber 11, thence by pipes 12 to other dust separators 14 in which it flows upwardly, and thence by pipes 15, and flues 17, 19 to a stack 20. The dust-separators consist of a number of tubular separating electrodes 24 connected to earth and wire electrodes 31 supplied with high-tension current from a connexion 45. The tubes 24 may be of square section- and arranged in groups with spaces 25 between them as shewn in section in Fig. 3. Hammers 40 are arranged to strike the outsides of the tubes 24 to detach the dust which falls into hoppers 43 and is removed through valved chambers 44<1> which communicate by pipes 136 with the hoppers 43 to avoid the blowing back of the dust when the chambers are opened. A partition 26 extends horizontally across the spaces 25, the gas passing from the chamber 5 into the upper part of the spaces 25 and thence through constricted openings 29 into the tubes 24 whence it passes to the lower space 25<1> and out to the chamber 11. Sliding doors 30 control the size of the openings 29. The electrodes 31 are hung from insulators 32 and weighted at 38. They are spaced by a bottom conducting frame 37 anchored at the corners at 39. Many modifications are described, the variations being mainly in the form and position of the constricting device 29. The constricting device may con. sist of a screen of wire or cotton cloth or other foraminous material arranged over the top of the tubes 24, or the tops of the pipes 24 may be contracted. The four outer corner tubes of a group mav be arranged in outwardly inclined directions so that their wire electrodes may be used to position the lower electrode frame 37. It is preferred to keep the apparatus under pressure to avoid the inward leakage of cold air. Specifications 119,236, 119,237, 119,238, 120,573, and 17840/12 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the subject-matter of Specifications 119,236, 119,237, 119,238, and 120,573 This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
