Electrically precipitating suspended particles from gases and vapours.-A conduit 2, Fig. 1, conveying impure gas and terminating in a dustchamber 3 has branches 4 leading to electric precipitators 6 which discharge the deposited dust into the chamber 3, the arrangement being such that large dust particles can settle before the gas enters the electric precipitators. Valves 8 - - 10 are arranged so that the impure gas may enter the precipitators through the branches 4, or through these and the dust-chamber simultaneously, or may be electrically treated while stationary. The impure gas delivered through the branches 4 may first pass through jackets 5 surrounding the precipitators 6, so that undesired condensation within the precipitators may be prevented. These jackets 5 may be cylindrical, while the precipitator casing 6 may be of square saction, one edge of each facing the inlet branch 4 so as to distribute the gas. Two or more sets of electrodes 6, 6<1>, Fig. 5, may be arranged one above or behind auother in each precipitator, and supplied with currents of different potential or strength. Insulators 13 supporting the lower set of electrodes may be placed outside the casing 11 of this set and above a partition 12 shutting off the impure-gas jacket from the upper part of the outer casing. Other insulators 15 for the upper electrodes may be situated in pockets 16 as described in Specification 181,284. The collecting electrodes may be plates.
