Abstract

120,573. Bradley, L. June 21, 1916, [Convention date]. Gases and vapours, treating electrically.-In apparatus for the electrical separation of suspended matter from gases having a number of treater tubes arranged in parallel between upper and lower headers, and each containing an axial electrode as described in Specification 107,389, the constricting means are disposed adjacent to the treater tubes or in partitions in the headers. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the constrictions 98 are arranged in the flues between the treater tubes 90, deflector plates 99 being preferably arranged near them. The central electrodes 111 are hung from a frame 140 which rests upon insulators 142 in side chambers 141, Fig. 4; screens 145, 144, are provided where the frame 140 passes through into the chambers 141, and screens 142<1> are arranged above the insulators 142 to protect them from dust. The electrodes 111 are hung from the frame 140 by clips 148, Fig. 3, a bolt passing through a slot in the frame 140 and a slot in the clip at right-angles to the first slot so as to allow of centring the electrodes in the tubes. In a modification, Fig. 6, the constrictions consist of openings 114<1>, 113<1> in partitions 114, 113 in the headers 116, 115, doors 127 being arranged over these openings to adjust their area. In another modification, Fig. 8, the constrictive openings consist of venturi tubes 131 in a partition 130 in the header 116. It is preferred to keep the apparatus under pressure to prevent inward leakage of cold air. The gases under treatment may be moistened as described in Specification 119,236 to regulate their conductivity; the flow of the gases may be downwards in the treater tubes as described in Specification 119,238, and the section of the treater tubes may be square or rectangular, as described in Specification 119,237. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the section of the treater tubes may be polygonal. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
