Abstract
1,073,745. Rotary-piston I.C. engines. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. July 7, 1964 [Aug. 9, 1963], No. 28033/64. Heading F1F. A piston for a rotary-piston I.C. engine of the n and n + 1 lobe type comprises a cast or moulded hollow part 1 having a peripheral wall 2 and end walls (3), Fig. 2 (not shown), welded at (8<SP>1</SP>, 8<SP>2</SP>) to a cylindrical hub 7, hollow liquid-tight boxes 6 being lodged within the piston to define with radial partitions 5<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>2</SP> and ribs (4) on the wall 2 a plurality of passages for flow of cooling liquid from inlets 9<SP>1</SP>, 9<SP>2</SP> to outlets 10<SP>1</SP>, 10<SP>2</SP> in the hub. The said boxes may be made of sheet steel, aluminium or synthetic plastics material and may be replaced by blocks of cast aluminium or cellular synthetic plastics material. Springs 6<SP>3</SP> press the boxes 6 into sealing engagement with the said ribs. In a modification, Figs. 3, 4 and 5 (not shown), the hub comprises two halves (17<SP>1</SP>, 17<SP>2</SP>) engaging with each other in a plane transverse to the axis of rotation of the piston and being clamped against the end walls (13) by axially-orientated bolts (18). Keys (18<SP>2</SP>) are provided to prevent the hub rotating relative to the rest of the piston. In another modification, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the piston comprises two identical halves (21<SP>1</SP>, 21<SP>2</SP>) with integral hub portions (27<SP>1</SP>, 27<SP>2</SP>), these halves being joined to each other in a plane transverse to the axis of rotation by axially - orientated studs (31) lodged in the hub portions and e.g. welding or brazing at (28, 32).
