Abstract

787,870. Filters. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd. July 27, 1956 [Aug. 17, 1955], No. 23661/65. Class 46. A filter comprises an assembly 1 of coaxial elements 2 ... 8 fitted to one another centrally and peripherally by faces normal to the axis, one at least of the elements being of powder metal and including a filter plate or web 28 extending substantially normal to the axis between the centre and peripheral faces, and clamped together axially between non-porous end elements 9, 10, each filter plate having an inlet, e.g., 30 or 29 on one face and an outlet, e.g., 29 or 30 on the other. As shown, the clamping means comprises a bolt 11 surrounded by a sleeve 21 within an apertured sleeve 22 spaced from the hollow centres of the plate elements, but the bolt 11 and sleeve 21 may be replaced by bolts engaging projecting lugs on the end elements 9, 10. Each filter plate is formed on each side with a central and a peripheral face, the faces being machined to contact in fluid-tight manner the faces of the adjacent plates or end elements. Grooves 29 in the peripheral face of one plate co-operate with similar grooves in an adjacent plate to form inlets or outlets as do similar grooves 30 on the opposite faces of the central parts of the plates to form outlets or inlets, liquid flowing for example from within an outer container 41 through the inlets 29 to spaces between the plates, through an adjacent plate, and out through the outlets 30 to the annular space between the central bores of the plates and the sleeve 22, and through that sleeve to an outlet 44 or vice versa. In modifications, an intermediate machine-faced rib is provided between the central and peripheral faces or the web 28 is reinforced with spokes.
