Abstract

1,073,490. Centrifugal compressors; gas turbine engines. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Feb. 3, 1966 [Feb. 18, 1965], No. 4760/66. Headings F1C and F1G. [Also in Division F2] Each impeller blade 28 of a centrifugal compressor for a gas turbine engine has a pair of webs 32, each of which abuts a corresponding web on an adjacent blade to form a rear wall constituting one side of the flow passage between the two blades. The blades 28 are fixed to a hub 24 by dovetail roots and are welded at their trailing edges to an annular back plate 34 which is welded to the hub. To allow radial growth of the blades 28 without load transfer through the webs 32, no connection is made between the abutting edges of the webs. Inducer vanes 40 which, as shown, may be staggered in relation to the blades 28, are formed integrally with a hub 38. The hub 38 and a collar 42 are connected to the hub 24 by a pair of pins 44. The impeller is connected to a turbine shaft 46 by a hollow tie bolt 48. Two spring-pressed lock pins 54 on the hub 38 engage the serrated edge 52 of an annular flange 50 on the tie bolt 48. External threads on the lower end of the tie bolt 48 engage internal threads on the upper end of the shaft 46. The upper circumferential edge of the shaft 46 has serrations mating with serrations 47 on the lower circumferential edge of the collar 42. Accessories (61), Fig. 1 (not shown), are supported by a housing (58) suspended within the inlet (12) by struts (60) and are driven by a shaft (62) which is splined to an internal tubular portion 64 of the tie bolt 48.
