Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula <F\1> wherein X is a C1- 6 alkenyl, or alkynyl group, Y is a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy or formyloxy group, Y1 is a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy, formyloxy or keto group and Z when present is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, wherein rings A and B may contain one or more double bonds and/or additional substituents, and their preparation by heating a compound of formula <F\2> wherein Y1 is a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy group and Y11 is a hydrogen atom or a hydroxy or keto group, with formic acid, followed, if desired, by hydrolysis of any formyloxy groups. The compounds of the invention may be used in fertility control, treatment of carcinomas of the prostate or treatment of virilizing tumours of the suprarenals, as pharmaceutical composi sions in combination with a carrier, for example in forms suitable for oral, parenteral or rectal administration, including implants.
