Abstract

The invention comprises 3-keto-17b -OR-estra-4,9,11-trienes wherein R is a hydrogen atom or an acyl group, and their preparation by cyclization of a 17b -acyloxy-4,5-seco-estra-9,11-diene-3,5-dione, followed if desired by 17-hydrolysis or re-esterification. The compounds of the invention have androgenic and anabolic activity and may be used in pharmaceutical compositions in combination with a carrier, for example in forms suitable for oral, parenteral or rectal administration.
