Abstract
1,073,295. Ingot moulds; casting processes. H. J. DAUSSAN. Nov. 25, 1963 [Jan. 29, 1963; Sept. 10, 1963], No. 46376/63. Heading B3F. An ingot mould (1), Fig. 1 (not shown), has a double wall through which air drawn through orifices (8) flows upwardly carrying heat from the lower part of the mould to the upper part. A filling (13) of, e.g. fireproofed corrugated cardboard forms vertical passages. The orifices (8) may be selectively plugged or covered. The outer walls (3) may be of fireproofed cardboard, cement, asbestos etc., covered with thin metal sheet. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the wall cavity may have a filling 12a of a mixture of heat insulating and exothermic material comprising wood sawdust, wood charcoal, granulated coke, asbestos waste and silico aluminous sand, and the inner wall (2) is lined below said filling with refractory bricks (18) In a further embodiment, the upper part of the cavity is filled with, e.g. cast iron shot, the size of which decreases in the upward direction. -Alternatively the filling may be glass or metal wool whose porosity decreases in the upward direction, asbestos waste, porous coke, vegetable or mineral fibres, hollow bricks or a mass of cement through which passages are formed by the combustion of combustible materials when the ingot is cast. In another modification, Fig. 9 (not shown) passages in the wall cavity are formed by tubes (50).
