Abstract

Dicyclopentenyl is made by subjecting 3-chlorocyclopentene-(1) to dehalogenating dimerization, e.g. using Mg; tricyclopentyl by reacting 3 - chlorocyclopentene with chlorodicyclopentenyl; and tetracyclopentenyl, see Example 1, by first preparing chloro-di-cyclopentenyl by reacting 3-chlorocyclopentene with cyclopentadiene in the presence of zinc chloride, and then dripping the chloro-dicyclopentenyl into a mixture of dry ether, tetrahydrofurane, and magnesium chips, and recovering as an oil the tetracyclopentenyl. Multicycloalkenyls can be obtained by similar methods, e.g. bis-cyclopentene - (21) - yl - dicyclooctene - (2) - yl by subjecting 1 - cyclopentene - (21) - yl - 4 - chlorocyclooctene-(2), obtained from 3-chlorocyclopentene-(1) and cyclooctadiene-(1,3), to dehalogenating dimerization.ALSO:Vulcanizable copolymers of ethylene, an alpha-olefine, and a multicycloalkenyl having two to six rings are made by effecting the copolymerization of a mixture of these monomers in the presence of a catalyst consisting of (1) a compound of transition elements of Groups IVa to VIa of the Periodic System, and (2) compounds of metals of Groups I to III, preferably of aluminium, sodium, lithium, and zinc, and which contain at least one hydrogen or alkyl group. The molar ratio of ethylene, alpha-olefine, and multicycloalkenyl is 1 to 10, 1 to 10, and 0.01 to 1.0. Suitable multicycloalkenyls are di-, tri-, or tetra-cyclopropenyl, di-, tri-, or tetra-cyclopentenyl, di-, tri-, or tetracyclohexenyl, and di- or tetra-cyclooctenyls. Exemplified copolymers are ethylene, propylene, and tetracyclopentenyl, and ethylene, propylene, and dicyclopentenyl. The copolymers are recovered by conventional methods, and can be sulphur vulcanized.
