Abstract
Copolymers of ethylene with even numbered alphatic alpha-olefins are made by contacting ethylene with an inert liquid reaction medium containing dissolved therein a catalytic system comprising (a) a compound of the formula MeR3- n Xn, wherein Me is aluminium, indium, or gallium, R is a hydrocarbon radical, X is halogen, and n is 1, 2 or 3, and (b) a transition metal, to form linear alpha-olefine oligmers, and continuing the process in the presence of an added copolymerization catalyst for the ethylene and alpha-olefin oligmers, said catalyst comprising either a transition metal compound other than (b), or a compound of the formula Me1R1n, where Me1 is Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca, Zn B, or Al, R1 is a hydrocarbon radical or an H atom and n is 1, 2, or 3, or an alkyl-aluminium hydride. The copolymerization catalyst may be generated from the catalyst system in the oligmerizing state by raising the temperature of the reaction mixture to 0 DEG to 120 DEG C., and continuing the copolymerization at this temperature. The temperature of the oligmer-forming stage may be - 50 to + 20 DEG C., and the preferred catalyst in this stage is ethyl aluminium sesquichloride and TiCl4. The added or formed copolymerization catalyst may be TiCl3, VOCl3, butyl lithium, (C2H5)3 Al, (C2H5)2 Al H, or tri-isobutyl aluminium. The product may be separated into fractions by extraction with ether.
