Heat sensitive electrical elements, e.g. negative temperature coefficient resistors, are located at different levels in the ink container of a printing machine so that if the level falls below the lower element, ink is supplied to the container, e. g. by operation of a solenoid valve, until the level reaches the upper element and causes the ink supply to be cut off. Other pairs of elements located elsewhere in the container may co-operate to ensure satisfactory control despite uneveness of level.
