Abstract

1,072,860. Yarn-winding apparatus. LEESONA CORPORATION. Dec. 11, 1963 [Dec. 11, 1962], No. 48843/63. Headings DID and D1J. A winding machine where yarn is fed from a supply package to be wound on a take-up package, is provided with a member to grip the yarn, severing means, and a guard normally enclosing the severing means and movable therewith; when the yarn-tension rises, the gripping-member, severing means and guard, move into the yarn path, the yarn is gripped and when a predetermined tension is achieved, the guard separates from the severing-means so that the yarn is cut between the supply package and the clamping member. The machine is of the type described in Specification 969776 in which yarn is fed from a working package S through a tensioner 16 and under a shoulder on a sensing-pin 20. When the yarn fails, the pin falls to engage a rotatable cam 22, Fig. 2, which is then rotated to cause a reserve package S1 to move into the working position. A yarn Y' from this package which has been previously disposed as shown at the end of a bail 34, moves into a loop 36 and is carried through a guide 38, and a tensioner 16, and is held at a suction port 39 while its free end is united to the working end by a suction device 41. If the yarn on this package is prevented from unwinding freely, the tension will rise and the yarn eventually will break. If the break occurs between the sensing-pin and the take-up the yarn lying beneath the sensing-pin 20 would not be pulled from under it and the package replacement operation above described could not take place. To prevent this happening, means are provided when the yarn tension rises for severing the yarn between the supply package and the sensing-pin so that the yarn is pulled from beneath he sensing-pin by the take-up and the pin is released for operation. Between the parts 36 and 16, the yarn takes a horizontal path to intercept which the gripper, severing means and guard can move when the tension rises. The gripper comprises a plate 58 having a clamp 66 cooperating with an anvil 68; the guard 76 comprising two spaced plates 72, 74 each with a notch 78; and the severing means comprises a plate 86 disposed between the plates 72, 74 with an inclined adjustable knife 92 in a slot 88, the latter being aligned with, but deeper than, the notches 78. The plates are mounted on a shaft 50 which extends through a wall 14, the mounting of plate 86 being positive by means of a flat 50, the other plates being loosely mounted. The shaft extends through the plate 58 by an aperture which has a notch 62 and a surface 60 of constant radius. The plates 86 and 58 are interconnected by a pin (109, Fig. 5) not shown, which normally extends from plate 86 into the notch 62, while the guard 76 and the plate 86 are interconnected by a tab 80 on the former which engages one leg 108 of a spring which is disposed in a cavity in the plate 86 and which bears against opposite surfaces of the cavity. By this means, the guard is positioned to shield the knife 92. The shaft 50 has a flange 110 and is biassed for counterclockwise movement by a spring 128 the ends of which are respectively connected to the flange and wall 14. The pin 112 projects from the flange and lies normally above a platform 116, which extends half way across a path 114 in the cam 22. When the fresh package Y' is in working position, should the yarn be trapped the cam 22 is rocked counter clockwise as described in Specification 969776. Accordingly, the platform 116 rises to rotate the shaft 50 clockwise, the interconnected plates 58, 76, 86 being similarly moved. The yarn is engaged in notches 78, 88 and, because the plate 58 is eccentrically mounted on pin 56, the pin 109 is gradually forced out of slot 62 against surface 60 so that the clamp 66 moves to engage the anvil 68 and grip the yarn. With continued rotation of the shaft 50 if the tension rises further the guard is held back by the tension, while the member 86 continues to rotate to bring blade against the yarn, and sever it. At this point pin 112, travelling in a circular path slips past the platform 116. so that the spring 128 is freed to rotate shaft 50 counterclockwise and restore the parts to inactive position. The pin 112 is reset by movements of the cam 22.
