Abstract

1,022,344. Safety belts. BRITAX (LONDON) Ltd. Aug. 20, 1963 [July 9, 1962], No. 26354/62. Heading A3V. A device for locating a drum-mounted safety belt 5 when the acceleration of the belt relative to the device exceeds a predetermined level includes a member 7 which rotates with the drum shaft 6 and carries an inertia member in the form of a pivoted pawl 9 lightly biassed to a normal position shown in full line in Fig. 2 but displaceable, when the predetermined spread of rotation is reached, along a cam surface 21 to the broken line position in which the pawl locks, Fig. 3 (not shown), between a tooth 8 on a fixed annulus 20 and a stop 18 on the member 7. A locking bar 16 carried by a sleeve is rotatable about the spindle 6 and lightly biased by a spring (not shown) to hold the bar adjacent the member 7. As the pawl moves to its locking position, a pin 12 projecting axially from the pawl moves up the bar to engage in a recess 1 Fig. 3. A spring catch (not shown) may be provided to hold the bar 16 out of its pawl locking position. The pawl is released from its locking position by rotation of a knob 17 secured to the sleeve 15. More than one pawl may be provided on the member 7 each associated with a locking bar and in another embodiment (not shown) a second inertia member of greater mass than the pawl 9 is rotatable about the sleeve 15 and is coupled to the member 7 by engagement of an elongated pin 12 carried by the pawl 9 in a slot in the edge of the inertia member. When the belt 5 is unwound slowly the inertia member rotates with the member 7 but a predetermined speed of rotation of the spindle 6 the inertia member lags, displacing the pawl 9 to its locking position.
