Abstract
1,072,371. Strengthening edges of non-metallic sheet material. PHOENIX TIMBER CO. Ltd. Nov. 19, 1963, [Nov. 19, 1962], No. 43716/62. Heading B5K. [Also in Division B8] A protective metal section having a maximum width equal to the thickness of a ligneous sheet material is affixed to an edge thereof by machining the edge such that it fits closely within the section and with the major surface of the sheet material flush with the adjoining surface of the section, and securing the section on the edge by an adhesive. Preferably the adhesive completely fills the space between the section and the sheet. The section is fitted to the sheet by moving it at right-angles to the rebated edge and in the plane of the sheet and is preferably a friction fit thereon to grip the sheet during curing or setting of the adhesive. The ends of the section are mitred to protect the corners of the sheet. Specified adhesives are adhesives having a basis of an epoxy resin or a phenolic, urea or melamine formaldehyde condensation product. A priming coat of adhesive may be applied to the inside face of the section to insure maximum adhesion. The surface of the section to be coated with adhesive may be sand blasted, shot blasted or chemically cleaned and abraded; preferably the ferriferous section is dipped in a solution consisting of 50% industrial methylated spirits and 50% orthophosphoric acid. The section may be of E-section, Fig. 2 (not shown), U-section, Fig. 4 (not shown), or as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. A composite section, Fig. 5, may be provided to form and protect the corners of boxes. Alternatively, Fig. 6, two sections may be provided at the box comer. The sheet material may be plywood, chipboard or a solid sheet of hardwood or softwood and used to construct load-carrying pallets, collapsible and rigid boxes, for shuttering-panels or as support or footways on scaffolding.
