Abstract
1,072,207. Making electrical connections. AMP Inc. March 29, 1966 [April 7, 1965], No. 13730/66. Heading B3A. Apparatus for effecting an electrical connection between a wire (14, Fig. 3) and a terminal post (12) by means of a connector (4) comprises a reciprocable ram driven by expansion of compressed springs (116) which are coupled to a reciprocable rack, the rack being driven, through a pinion, by a motor to compress the springs, and a latch being arranged to release the springs for driving the ram. The connection is effected as described in Specification 956,118, connectors being fed by spring-arms (28, Fig. 2) the ends (30) of which engage the gap between the leading and adjacent connectors. A spring-loaded plate (52, Fig. 3) engages the second connector so that the first connector is broken from the strip of connectors, as described in Specification 1,008,673. During return strokes of this connector-pusher (18), the strip of clips is held by a stop (54, Fig. 4) on the plate (52). The pusher (18) is coupled to the springs (126) by two separate devices, one of which releases on overload and the other is a rigid, disengageable coupling, which is effective during the first portion of the stroke when the connector is dragging the wire from an opening (42) in the mandrel (36), as described in Specification 1,013,318. A trigger device provides a two-stage working stroke, as described in Specification 1,026,970, at the end of the first stage of which the connector overhangs the forward end of the mandrel, and during the second stage it is pushed on to the post. A pin (72, Fig. 11) connects the pushrod (18) to its carrier (64), and the releasable overload connection, between the carrier (64) and a slide (107) engaged by the springs (126), comprises ball-bearings (88) releasably coupling the carrier (64) to levers (92). If the pusher encounters excessive resistance, the bearings (88) will be unseated from recesses (85) in the carrier (64) and pivot the levers (92) against the resistance of spring-fingers (98). Thus freed, the slide and lever assembly continue to move while the carrier (64) is stationary. The disengageable, rigid drive connection between the slide (107) and carrier (64) comprises a rockable plate (127) with a tongue (128) which engages and pushes forward the web (66) of the carrier (64). The drive is disengaged by swinging the tongue downwardly by contact between feet (148) on the plate and stationary ears (149). Power from the motor (164) for retracting the slide is transmitted through gearing (168, 170, 172, 174) to the pinion (182) engaging the endless racks (186). A plate (177, Fig. 16) rotatable with the pinion carries fly weights (179) having felt inserts (185) which have a braking action for retarding the forward movement of the slide. The racks (186) are mounted in an opening (192) in a plate (150) pivotably mounted on the slide. At the end of a working stroke, a shoulder (201, Fig. 6) on the plate (150) operates a switch arm (200) for starting the motor (164). As the rack is driven rearwardly about the pinion (176), the plate (150) swings slightly and positions an arm (194) for holding the switch closed until the end of the return stroke. The trigger mechanism, comprising a wedge member (248, Fig. 12), a spring plate (230) and a plate (214), is operated by a trigger (256). In the loaded condition (Figs. 1 and 13), the slide (107) is held by an ear (228) of the plate (214) engaging a shoulder (212) on the slide. The slide is released by squeezing the trigger (256), which forces the wedge member (248) to move the plate (214) to the right (Fig. 14) and free the slide. The ear then moves to a position in front of a shoulder (208) on the slide to halt its movement, a spring (220) acting to absorb shook. A second squeezing of the trigger (256) frees the slide for completion of its stroke.
