Abstract
1,072,187. Balancing universal joints. W. & T. AVERY Ltd. Oct. 23, 1964 [June 4, 1964], No. 43244/64. Heading F2U. In a method for dynamically balancing a Hooke's type universal joint, the cross 25, 26 of the joint is displaced relative to the forks 27, 28 of the outer members of the joint, in response to measurements of dynamic unbalance, by fluid pressure jacks 2-5 to bring the inertial and rotational axes of the joint into coincidence. A pair o jacks, e.g. 2, 3, act in opposition on one end of a cross limb 25 and on the opposite fork limb 27 respectively. Adjustment is made first along an axis W and then along a normal axis S, both normal to the shaft axis, the parts being retained in their adjusted positions by retaining rings for the bearing bushes 30, 31. For a cardan shaft with its two joints, the latter are balanced successively. Valves 18, 19 control the supply of pressure fluid through lines 20-23 to the jacks 2-5 which latter are supported by a frame 1.
